Big Sister Foundation is a philanthropic foundation improving the lives of women and families in Sydney’s south eastern suburbs. We provide support and build capacity in local community organisations who are delivering services directly to women and families in need. As one of the largest non-government funders in the local community, we have donated over $6.8M since 2004.

We are seeking to appoint an additional volunteer Board Director to enhance the expertise and diversity of the Big Sister Foundation board. This position presents an exciting opportunity to join a committed, collaborative board and be part of a leadership team contributing Big Sister’s strategic direction and long-term sustainability planning.

As an inclusive organisation we welcome applicants with a diversity of skills, backgrounds, and experiences. We are seeking applications from energetic and committed individuals who share our passion for making a positive impact in the local community and who can contribute to the workings of the Board.

Ideally, applicants will have GAICD accreditation, or some Director experience. Or if not, be able to demonstrate professional experience and capabilities in the following:

  • Business, government, philanthropic or nonprofit sectors
  • Knowledge of the Sutherland Shire and St George community sectors
  • An understanding of working with community organisations

Importantly we are looking for

  • Personal attributes of integrity, credibility and passion for improving the lives of women.
  • The ability to work as a positive, engaged board and team member
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills
  • Constructive, creative and ‘big picture’ thought process

The following skill sets will also be considered favourably :

  • IT skills
  • Social media / communication /community engagement
  • Social impact-  evaluation and measurement
  • Governance or policy development

Big Sister Foundation directors play an active and visible leadership role in the community. Membership of the Board provides you the opportunity to meet and connect with like-minded community members and make a contribution in a meaningful way to local services.

Board directors are all involved in undertaking the Board’s functions with a focus on financially sustainable operations, strategic governance and planning processes. Directors are required to be available to attend 10 monthly Board meetings and the AGM, all of which are held after hours, either remotely or in our Gymea office. In addition, Directors may need to review information and requests outside of these meeting times, on an ‘as required’ basis. Opportunities to attend Partner fundraising events and related board training and development are available and encouraged.

Administrative support, insurance  and other expenses related to directors duties are provided . All board positions are undertaken on a voluntary basis, without remuneration. The appointment is on an initial 1-year term with the possibility for further term extensions.

Summary – Responsibility of Big Sister Foundation Board Directors

  • Governance – oversight of financials and ASIC reporting, funds management , legal , risk and compliance management
  • Strategic Direction – developing strategic direction plans, prioritising strategic initiatives and grant programs
  • Monitor the achievements of investment funds and grant investments
  • Work collaboratively with the other directors, general manager, Foundation staff and third parties
  • Articulate the organisation’s values, vision, mission and strategies 
  • Communicate and collaborate with external stakeholders and grant partners
